Jewelry specialist Virginia Salem recently participated as a panel guest speaker at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

Virginia shed light on the captivating world of Art Deco Jewelry at the event.

The symposium, ‘Fashion at the 1925 Art Deco Exhibition,’ marked its 100th anniversary at FIT in New York City. Guided by MFIT Couture Council member Gordon Kendall, the panel delved into the enduring impact of the exhibition on fashion and design.

Virginia shared insights on jewelry pieces from the era, ranging from exquisite sapphire and diamond bracelets to a versatile diamond clip brooch that transforms into two distinct pieces (pictured above). One such highlight was the showcased diamond clip brooch, offering dual styling options as both a brooch and two separate lapel brooches.

During the Art Deco period, platinum emerged as the predominant metal choice for jewelry due to its durability and ideal properties for securing diamonds and precious gemstones. The era also witnessed the popularity of strap or ‘band’ bracelets adorning wrists and upper arms, featuring a fusion of diamond shapes like square, circular, and pear-shaped variations.

Moreover, designers embraced the use of calibre-cut sapphires to achieve a seamless and paved aesthetic, enhancing the geometric motifs and patterns synonymous with Art Deco jewelry design. The marriage of distinct diamond shapes and meticulously placed sapphires contributed to the allure of the era’s jewelry craftsmanship, exemplifying a harmonious blend of elegance and innovation.
